A Nation Under Corruption – Case Study of Nigeria

bad-roads1 The unfortunate situation we find ourselves in my country Nigeria in terms of the level of development and lack of, or poor basic amenities is worrisome. The fact remains that every part of Nigeria is under six (6) government control. That is, every location in Nigeria, including where you and I live in Nigeria, has 6 avenues from which billions of naira is being allocated through budget provisions for its development every year.

First, the area you and I live belongs to a local government. Money is allocated to your local government to develop your area. Second, your area falls under a particular state. Money is allocated to develop every part of your state, including your area. Third, the federal government of Nigeria has a responsibility with money allocated to develop all areas in Nigeria. Fourth, the place where you live belongs to a state constituency. The (dis)honourable members of the state houses of assembly collect constituency allowances for the purpose of developing their constituencies. Fifth, your location falls under a federal constituency. The (dis)honourable members at the Federal House of Representatives in Abuja collect constituency allowances for the purpose of developing their constituencies. Sixth, the place where you live is also under a senatorial district. The (un)distinguished senators at the Senate in Abuja collect constituency allowance for the purpose of developing their senatorial districts. Fellow Nigerians, with all these avenues where big money is being pumped into every part of Nigeria, I then begin to wonder why the roads are bad, no portable water, no light, no security, no good hospitals, no good public schools, etc. In short, no meaningful government presence! With all these billions of naira being allocated to develop every nook and cranny of the country every year, should there be any area without good basic amenities? Where are the monies going? The monies from your local government, state government, federal government, state constituency, federal constituency and senatorial district that have been (and is being) allocated to develop your area, where are they entering? Imagine the kind of development we would have had in Nigeria if all these monies were to be used for the purposes for which they were meant. The advanced developments in the great countries of the world was not magical, it was a result of the people in government spending money meant to develop the society for the right purposes. It is highly pathetic this avoidable situation we find ourselves, no thanks to the few individuals that keep on pocketing the money meant for our collective development every year. The masses are suffering! Fellow Nigerians, CORRUPTION has killed us!
